Discharges of Various Consistency

Vaginal discharge is a feature that is inherent to any woman of reproductive age. In healthy women, discharges may be scant, slimy, little unclear, since they are composed of cells of the epithelium of the vagina. The most common cause of vaginal discharge changes in the nature are infectious and inflammatory diseases of the genital organs: trichomoniasis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis.

Mucus Discharge

Brown mucus discharge is blood, mixed with vaginal mucus. The norm is brown mucus spotting, appearing in a couple of days before menstruation. If spotting precedes the menstruation for more than two days this indicates diseases of the female genital. If there is mucus discharge during pregnancy it is not normal. And do not listen to those who say this is the way the “embryo is being washed”, especially if you have not previously performed ultrasound. Such discharge may be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, missed abortion, and the threat of miscarriage or already starting.

Sticky Discharge

Sticky discharge of pinkish or brownish color is normal, especially after ovulation. It is associated with aging tissues that occur mainly during menstruation. So normally you may experience sticky discharge a few days before your period. But sticky smelly discharge is rather abnormal. The main reason for an unpleasant odour may be inflammatory diseases, such as bacterial vaginosis, in this case your doctor will obviously prescribe antibiotics.

Stringy Dischargе

If, before the twelfth week of pregnancy, there are viscous mucus, then the thirteenth week, the situation begins to change somewhat. This is due to hormonal changes in the body – activation of estrogen. Due to this phenomenon, the discharge becomes somewhat thinner, less viscous, but its number may increase considerably. If the situation of pregnancy is not yours, stringy discharge may obviously be a sign of inflammatory diseases like endometritis or endometriosis. Especially if the discharge is followed by an unpleasant odour. You should undoubtedly consult your gynecologist. Treatment on early stages is always easier and more effective than on late stages.

The possibility of occurrence and severity of inflammation of the female reproductive system depend on the condition of the vaginal microbiota.

The factors of self-purification and protection of the vagina include:

  • sufficient level of estrogen in the body;

  • glycogen in the epithelium of the vagina;

  • the presence of lactobacilli, lactic acid;

  • certain pH vaginal contents;

  • availability of immunoglobulins contents in vagina (immune factors).

  • athological changes in the vaginal microbiocenosis may be caused by:

  • treatment with antibiotics;

  • treatment with cytostatics;

  • hormone therapy;

  • endocrine pathology (diabetes mellitus);

  • use of oral contraceptives;

  • any conditions which lead to a breach of the immune status.

Often a woman gets used to her gradually changed and already abnormal discharge and can not critically assess its character, considers them normal. Gynecologist estimates this aspect of women’s health along with other indicators of the reproductive system. So try not to miss visits to gynecologist every six months, that will prevent lots of inconveniences with your health.
